Before it became a cathedral, it was formerly called as The Church of Manila. The first cathedral was built out of nipa huts. There was also time where it was constructed using stone and mortar.The Manila Cathedral carry the rich history of the Filipinos. It was established by a secular priest named Juan de Vivero, known to be the one who baptized Rajah Matanda. It was formerly owned by the Mexican Diocese up until the year 1571 where it became separate from the Diocese of Mexico. The last structure of the cathedral was accomplished after the World War II. Due to the calamities that struck the Philippines, the church fell under several destruction. It had major renovations until its latest, 2 years ago. 
This is the eighth cathedral built ever since the establishment of the Archdiocese of Manila. Several popes like Paul VI and Paul II have visited the basilica. It houses different kinds of art by several Filipino artists. It does not only have a religious purpose, but can also be used to promote the tourism of the country. The facade resembles little Spanish and Roman structures.
